Solving Problems With Uncommon Windows File Types

February 2, 2011/1 Comment/in Registry Cleaners /by admin

Innumerable file types are used on any given computer, some are ones about which every user is aware of, such as the .doc file type, but there are others which are less known and sparingly used. For instance, how many Windows users have heard about the .exy file extension?

The good news is that when dealing with errors related to uncommon file types, this lack of knowledge does not prove to be a handicap. This is because most file type errors can be effectively resolved using certain generic rules.

So, next time you are staring at a file type error, perform the following steps to put an end to your troubles.

Step #1 – Open the file using a reliable file opener program

Have you received an unknown file type, such as .cpy file extension file as an e-mail attachment and are receiving ‘Windows cannot open the file’ error when you double-click the file?

The most common issue pertaining to unknown file types is the occurrence of an error when one tries to view the file. To resolve these issues, you can use either of the approaches listed below:

  • Use a file opener program – A reliable file opener program allows you to open different file types with ease, including the ones about which little is known. So, if you need to open a file but cannot do so, simply use a file opener software.
  • Install the required program – Try to search the Internet to know more about the file that you need to open, such as the program with which the file is associated. Next, install the program and use it to open the file.

Step #2 – Run a malware scan

A common cause of application errors, including .data file extension errors is malware infection. Malware programs affect your computer and installed applications in many ways, including deleting or altering important files and causing random file errors to appear.

In case your computer screen is constantly besieged with repetitive file type errors, chances are you have become a victim of Malware infection.

Act before it is too late – a severely infected computer may not even boot. Update your security software with the latest Malware definitions to enable it to identify the latest threats and take appropriate action. Next, reboot Windows in Safe Mode and run a complete system scan. To reboot Windows in Safe Mode, perform the following steps:

  1. Close all open applications.
  2. Click the Start button and select Restart.
  3. Press and hold F8 as your computer reloads.
  4. Select the Safe Mode option using the arrow keys in the Windows Advanced Boot Option menu and press Enter.

Step #3 – Run a registry scan

Another common cause of file type errors is incorrect file association, which in turn primarily occurs due to registry errors. You can fix file type errors occurring due to registry errors by performing a thorough registry scan using a professional Windows registry cleaning utility.

A clean and compact registry does not only improve your system’s performance, but also helps in keeping a tab on file type and various other errors.
